Mission

FreeMo is a Python library, command-line utility, and local web application for restoring local control of legacy Belkin WeMo devices without requiring Belkin cloud services.

FreeMo can also expose rescued devices to modern smart-home ecosystems through an optional Matter bridge while preserving independent local control.

If the hardware still works, the owner should still be able to use it as intended when it was purchased.

Philosophy

Technology should empower ownership, not limit it.

When someone purchases a device, ownership should not depend on the continued existence of a manufacturer's cloud service, mobile application, or business decisions.

FreeMo exists to preserve the usefulness of hardware by communicating directly with devices using their native local protocols and by providing optional standards-based integration with modern smart-home ecosystems.

No cloud.

No subscriptions.

No vendor lock-in.

Just local control.

Design Principles

Our Promise

FreeMo will always prioritize the owner's ability to use hardware they have already purchased.

Cloud services may come and go.

Ownership should remain.
